SugarHouse Casino in Fishtown may soon have some company, as five groups are vying for the coveted second Philadelphia casino license currently on offer by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. The suitability hearings have just been held, and we are inching closer to knowing who the winner will be. With that in mind, these are the five places that are in contention.

Artwriter Robert Preece Started As Tyler Student

Although Robert Preece graduated from Tyler with a BA in Art History in 1990, he has worked in Holland as a full-time writer for the past fifteen years.

Most recently, an interview that Preece conducted with the artist Phoebe Cummings made the December 2013 cover of Sculpture magazine. Preece has covered the Northwest European region for the magazine as a Contributing Editor since 1999.

Alyssa Wojcik’s Job Has Perks

Alyssa Wojcik has been working at the United Zion Retirement Community in Lancaster since she was sixteen years old. When she went to Tyler she continued working at the retirement community in the dietary department.

“Before United Zion, I did not have any real art education experience other than very small projects that I had done in the National Art Honor Society in high school,” Wojcik said.

After she received her degree in Painting from Tyler in 2012, she applied for a job in the Activities/Recreational Therapy department at the retirement community.

Morgan Gilbreath’s The Ground Beneath My Feet

Senior Morgan Gilbreath came to Tyler because she wanted to take on a double major, a school that was not just an art school, and to be in an urban environment. She is currently pursuing a BFA with a concentration in Glass, a BA in Art History, and a certificate in Community Arts from Tyler.

In the past year, Gilbreath has been awarded the Tyler School of Art Partner Scholarship, had an article published in Cleaver Magazine, and had an original piece installed in Temple Contemporary.

Corinne Bishop Finishes Diamond Research Scholars Project

Diamond Scholar recipient Corinne Bishop has spent the last semester working on researching, finding inspiration, and creating her jewelry collection, “Material Lineage.”

The Diamond Research Scholars Program gives Temple students the chance to focus on a research or creative arts project during their summer and fall semester while registered for an independent study/research course. Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, Emily Moerer, explains that the faculty-mentored research program promotes high-impact activity to enhance student learning.

“Artists for Haiti” to Hold Charity Fundraiser

In 2011, the Penn State Project Haiti chapter approached Temple University to start an organization that would work to fund a new orphanage in Petite Riviere de Artibonite, Haiti.

Project Haiti Temple University was created and began holding movie nights, bake sales, and clothing drives to raise money for the Saint Francis Xavier Orphanage.

In 2012, Meredith McDevitt began the fundraiser “Artists for Haiti” in hopes that the Tyler community would come together to raise funds for the orphanage.

“I have always thought that one of the greatest ways to give back to those in need is to use your own personal talents in a collaborative effort,” McDevitt said. “This fundraiser enables the artists of Tyler to create or donate their work for charity.”

Tyler Professor’s Work on Display at Museum of Art & Design

Sweetmeat by Doug Bucci

Adjunct Jewelry Professor Doug Bucci makes all of his jewelry on a 3D printer. His piece “Sweetmeat” is currently on display for the Museum of Art & Design’s “Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital” exhibition.

“Two years ago, I was invited by MAD’s curator Ron Labaco to be a part of the Out of Hand exhibition,” Bucci said. “Labaco had seen the beginnings of my new series ‘Sweetmeat’ at the 2011 SOFA New York exhibition. The work was presented by Sienna Gallery as part of the exhibition ‘Covet’.”

Photography Student Works on Susquehanna River Project

After taking her first darkroom class in high school, Havre de Grace native Hannah Close fell in love with photography. When she decided to further her education, Close found that Tyler’s Photography Department was a fit for her.

“I wanted to be further away from home than Baltimore, and Philly is a great city,” Close said. “Both of my parents went to Temple, plus Tyler was a beautiful, brand new facility. By far the nicest facilities of any of the art schools I applied to.”

Now Close is a senior and has recently been awarded both a Diamond Peers Teaching Award and a CARAS Project Grant.

Canal Convergence Features Work From Joy Holland (BFA Sculpture ’06)

Joy Holland (BFA ’06) studied Sculpture, Art History, and Italian when she was a student at Tyler. Now, her work in public art is being recognized everywhere from Pero, Milan to Scottsdale, Arizona.

“I’ve worked really hard to develop projects–to some degree of success–in which my audience is connected to me personally through collaborative relationships that develop over time,” Holland said. “In many public art works that is not the case.”
